Tenuta Plozner was bought by Cristiana in 2013 and, following her philosophy, she converts the vineyard to organic farming. It is a big challenge for Cristiana because she decides to explore a territory very different from her hills near Verona. Nevertheless this area is as much fascinating and suited for the cultivation of the vine: the GRAVE FRIULANE. The challenge is great: 43 ha of vines to handle away from home. The winery , created in the sixties by Lisio Plozner, was already well-known in this area and abroad.
Nowadays Plozner estate has 43 ha of vines. The varieties of grape are the typical of the territory: Friulano, Sauvignon (with various clonal selections), Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco, Merlot, Moscato giallo. Recently, after the purchase of Plozner estate by Cristiana, it has been increased the area planted with vineyards focusing on Glera, the grape of Prosecco. Here we are in the area of the denomination Prosecco and the sparkling process is made directly in the cellar. The vineyard is very dense: 6000 plants per ha and the way of training is “Guyot”.
The cellar, as the vineyard, was built in the sixties. Lisio Plozner, innovator by nature, designed a cellar very advanced for the times: nowadays this cellar is still a model of efficiency. It has been organized at three levels. Downstairs are located the sparkling tanks, in the middle floor there are the steel fermenters at a controlled temperature, the oak barrels (up to 60 hl) for the aging of red wines and the tanks in vitrified cement for stabilization of young wines. For the vinification of red wines is used “Ganimede “ system. Upstairs are located: the warehouse, the bottling area, the wine shop and the large tasting room with a central fireplace
Tenuta Plozner is located in Barbeano of Spilimbergo , in the heart of GRAVE. This d.o.c area is in the northern Friuli flat land between Pordenone and Udine and it is particularly suited for the cultivation of the vine. These soils, called also MAGREDI or lean lands, are made up of gravelly alluvial detritus, deposited over thousand of years by the rivers Meduna, Cellina and Tagliamento after the melting of Alpine glaciers. The flat land (here we are at 140mt above sea level) has 70% rocks and gravel, which become gradually thinner way down towards the sea. The vine is genetically used to live in less fertile soils and it founds in this soil the proper intake of nutrients : the crops are limited but of high quality. The gravelly soil drains the abundant spring rains. The climate is mild thanks to the protection by the Carnic Alps from the cold winds of the North and thanks to the influence of the warm currents from the near Adriatic sea. The Grave of Friuli are the suitable terroir for the production of white wines, to be appreciated for the elegant bouquet, the fresh taste and the mineral note. These wines are particularly long- lived.
The hills east of Verona are the area where our family has grown vines, made and sold wine since the
beginning of 1900s. Cristiana Collection is a project to promote three territories, three estates, three
brands with their wines.
